New sights #solc24

I cannot look at the Petronas Towers in Kuala Lumpur and not immediately think about Sean Connery and Catherine Zeta Jones in Entrapment. You might raise your eyebrows in slight disbelief at my interesting choice of connection. I remember it well! The peak of the movie, which was set at the turn of the millenium, included the frantic plugging in of wires and downloading of information building up to a heady finish where Connery and Zeta- Jones almost escape and then it all goes very wrong- lots of fast paced car chases and running through the magnificent towers ensue. I smiled at the memory as I walked below them last night- it is a spectacular sight. The towers literally and metaphorically tower above the city, glistening like diamond studded statues casting light and glitter far and wide.

This evening we went to China town, to the beautiful and atmospheric restaurant, Old China Cafe. Steeped in history and legend, the restaurant serves a delectable array of local food… each dish with a story and a history of its own. We sampled the delicious green fern dish tossed in garlic, ‘the’Devils‘ chicken curry with a fascinating Portuguese history, prawns in a smooth luxurious curry and the famous beef rendang– this is a dry preparation without a whole lot of curry but meat that is so succulent and tender it falls apart. The narrow streets around the restaurant adorned in lanterns and stunning frescoes on the walks tell stories of a bygone era… you cant help but walk on further and be enchanted by the whole experience.

There is so much to discover and so much to learn about a new city. Food, customs, dress, festivities…. my time here has been too short and yet so full of so much rich learning, so much to absorb, so much to appreciate and so much to wonder about.

  1. Thank you for taking me to a place I’ve never been! I love your description of those ‘diamond studded’ towers and also your descriptive food writing. They make me want to embrace adventure.
